Every special character has a shortcut. Nobody remembers them.
We were always searching the web for keyboard shortcuts: how do you type an em dash again? Where is the euro sign? On a Mac, Apple's Character Viewer is hidden behind ⌃⌘Space. On Windows, it's Alt codes you have to look up every time. We could never remember any of it.
So we built RivetChar. One hotkey opens every character on your computer. Search for it by name, see the key combination that types it, and double-click to drop it into whatever you're writing. Next time, you'll know the shortcut by heart.
Find any character by name.
Type what you're looking for: "arrow", "euro", "heart" or "check". RivetChar searches 29,000 characters, every emoji and 96 kaomoji, and puts the ones you're most likely to want first. Emoji understand everyday words too, so "happy" or "lol" find the right face.
- 29,000 characters, 1,900 emoji and 96 kaomoji
- Search by name, keyword or Unicode number
- Everyday keyboard shortcuts show up in the same search
- Recent and Favorites keep your regulars close
See the shortcut. Learn it once.
Every character you can type straight from the keyboard shows its key combination right on the tile: Option-key shortcuts on a Mac, Alt codes on Windows. Pick one to see the keys big, then type it yourself next time. Copying a character reminds you of its shortcut, too.

- Accents explained step by step: ⌥E, then E for é
- A list of every character you can type from the keyboard
- A cheat sheet of everyday keyboard shortcuts
Hold Option and Shift, then press 8.
Straight into what you're writing.
Double-click a character, or press Return, and RivetChar types it into the app you were using: Mail, Notes, Slack, Word, anywhere. Your clipboard is put back the way it was afterwards.
- Works in any app that accepts text
- Copy instead with ⌘C (Ctrl+C) or the Copy button
- Copy the Unicode, HTML or CSS code with one click

Questions
How is this different from the character viewer on my computer?
Apple's Character Viewer and the Windows emoji panel are hard to find and don't tell you how to type anything. RivetChar opens with a hotkey you choose, shows the keyboard shortcut for every character that has one, types characters straight into your app with a double-click, and adds kaomoji, fancy letters, a magnifier, font comparison and themes.
Why does it ask for Accessibility permission on a Mac?
To type a character into another app, RivetChar puts it on the clipboard and presses ⌘V for you. macOS needs your permission for an app to press keys. If you'd rather not allow it, RivetChar copies the character and you paste it yourself.
Does it work with my keyboard?
RivetChar shows the shortcuts for the US keyboard layout. Characters still insert with a double-click on any keyboard.
When are Windows and Linux coming?
Soon. The Windows version shows Alt codes instead of Mac shortcuts and lives in the system tray, and Linux follows after that. Like every Rivet app, they share the same features and updates as the Mac version.
Can you see what I type?
No. RivetChar runs entirely on your computer. It doesn't read what you type, and nothing you search or insert is ever sent anywhere.
How do updates work?
RivetChar checks for new versions on its own. When one is ready, a red dot appears on the Ω and you can install it from the menu with one click.
